MetCare to Implement Customer Education Initiative to Bolster Communication and Disease Management Capabilities
WEST PALM BEACH, FL (July 14, 2009) — Metropolitan Health Networks, Inc. (NYSE Amex: MDF), (“MetCare”) a leading provider of healthcare services in Florida, today announced a further development in the company’s transformation to a Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) health care delivery model. The company has selected Emmi Solutions, a developer of interactive patient education programs, to provide self-management tools for MetCare’s customer education initiative. The programs will be available to customers of the company’s nine wholly-owned internal medicine offices in South and Central Florida.
“Customer education helps improve the overall health care experience as well as increase the confidence in MetCare’s ability to provide quality, comprehensive care,” said Jose Guethon, MD, MBA, President and Chief Operating Officer of MetCare of Florida. “Customer education is a best practice and a key component of MetCare’s transformation from a traditional healthcare delivery model to a PCMH model. Emmi® programs provide our physicians with a useful tool to coordinate our customers’ overall care. Giving our customers an opportunity to learn about and manage their specific medical conditions improves their health care quality and promotes prevention. We believe that with an engaged and well-informed customer, we can deliver better outcomes for them and derive substantial cost reductions throughout our system.”
Emmi programs are presented to patients in a multimedia format on a computer using a conversational voice to guide patients and make complex medical information easy to understand. The programs engage patients at their own level and cover more than 100 medical procedures and conditions, including asthma, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
A MetCare doctor can prescribe an Emmi program to his or her patient during an office visit. The patient will be given a confidential access code to view the program from his or her home computer or another location, such as a library or community center. Through Emmi’s administrative portal, the doctor will be able to check whether the patient has watched the prescribed program by the next visit. This gives the doctor and patient an opportunity to further discuss questions or concerns about a chronic illness, medication, or medical device.
"Creating informed and activated patients is the foundation of the Patient Centered Medical Home and is a proven strategy for improving quality and lowering healthcare costs." said Ronald Rooth, chief executive officer for Emmi Solutions. "MetCare is fundamentally changing the way they engage patients before, during, and after each encounter with the healthcare system. Through our partnership, they are making effective communication with patients the standard of care."
